  7. Identification: 14-30 inches; moderately slender snake with a pattern of black, red and whitish crossbands on the sides and back; belly white; snout red and pointed; scales smooth.

  9. Habit: These snakes occur in upland pine woods. Scarlet snakes hide in burrows during the day venturing out at night to forage. They are not known to bite when captured.
